GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A playground for kids of all abilities opened up at Sullivan Elementary School on Friday.
The Green Bay Area Public School District and the city allocated funds from the 2022 referendum to build the new playground and a federal grant.
It’s the latest playground of its kind in Green Bay, and the third built this year including an inclusive playground at Bay Beach Amusement Park.
Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich said building structures like this are beneficial to citizens of all ages.
“It’s really something that all people can benefit from, these inclusive playgrounds are more accessible to all kids of all ages and adults too of different abilities,” said Genrich. “Whatever we can do to add amenities like this — especially in partnership with our school district — is something we’re all about all the time.”
This is also the fourth inclusive playground in the district following one that opened at the Aldo Leopold Community School in August.
Interim Superintendent Vicki Bayer spoke at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the park. She thanked the city for their contributions to the park.
Sullivan Elementary School is the largest elementary school in Green Bay. We have almost 700 students here. Over the decades, this school has served students of all abilities. Many of those students didn’t have to playground equipment. I want to begin by thanking the city of Green Bay for investing in much needed new equipment for the playground and the Green Bay Parks and Rec and Forestry Department staff for all of their work on the playground and for maintaining the beautiful park.
Though the ceremony was held today, students have had access to the playground for more than a week.
