MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Jesse Vang was appointed lawyers to defend him against charges he’s responsible for the death of Elijah Vue — and they asked to postpone Thursday’s scheduled preliminary hearing to give them time to prepare.
Vang, 39, faces four counts, including physical abuse of a child – repeated acts causing death, and hiding a corpse for the death of the 3-year-old boy. Vue’s mother, Katrina Baur, is also charged in the case.
Vang appeared in court Monday, but had not yet been appointed an attorney. A preliminary hearing was set for Thursday, although it was acknowledged then the hearing may need to be delayed.
Attorneys Jeffery Jensen and Joel Mogren were assigned to the case today, and they immediately filed a motion asking for a new date.
“Counsel cannot be properly prepared for the currently-scheduled preliminary hearing for the following reasons: a. Both attorneys have a scheduling conflict the afternoon of October 24, 2024, which conflicts could be worked-around if necessary; but, b. There is insufficient time for counsel to meet with Vang in the Manitowoc County Jail to discuss the case and to prepare for the preliminary hearing,” Jensen wrote.
District Attorney Jacalyn LaBre has not formally replied to the motion.
Baur waived her preliminary hearing Monday. She returns to court Oct. 30 for an arraignment.
