GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A major downtown Green Bay project broke ground Tuesday.
“I’m here to tell you, at NEWNorth I serve 18 counties in Northeast Wisconsin and there is nothing like this in all of Northeast, so this is truly going to be a magnet,” said Barb LeMue. She is President of NEW North, as well as the On Broadway board president.
LeMue was just one of the more than one dozen people to talk about the significance of this development during the ceremonial groundbreaking.
“The Green Bay Public Market will serve as a catalyst for increased opportunities for both Green Bay and the Oneida community,” added Oneida Chairman Tehassi Hill.
Demolition work has already started to transform 211 North Broadway, formerly known as Old Fort Square, into Green Bay Public Market.
The $18.3 million project will feature 20 vendors with year-round access to fresh produce and goods.
On Broadway officials say they are 12 vendors who have signed letters of intent, but they are not revealing who they are or the good and services they supply just yet. President and CEO of On Broadway, Brian Johnson, said, “You know you need a fishmonger, you need a meat producer, you’d love to see a baker. Right? Those are really key elements to any public market and we’ll leave a space empty if we’re not meeting the exact balance that we need to get.”
The Green Bay Public Market is projected to have an annual economic impact of $65 million.
Johnson said, “This is really a significant investment here in our community from our donors to our government entities that is going to impact Northeast WI for years to come.”
“This truly is a tourist attraction. And on behalf of the millions of visitors that come to Green Bay every year, thank you for your work on this. They are going to love it,” added Brad Toll with Discover Green Bay.
Project leaders previously expected the Green Bay Public Market to be operational by April for the NFL Draft but at Tuesday’s event they said it likely would be summer of 2025.
