(WIAA) MADISON – A pair of singles players and two doubles teams won championships at the 2024 State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Third-seeded Clare Schaefer of Whitefish Bay won the Division 1 singles crown with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over fourth-seeded McKenna Thorson of Verona after placing sixth the past two seasons. Schaefer improved her season record to 29-1, and Thorson finishes the season with a 32-2 record.
West De Pere’s Lexie Hankel lost in the semifinals to Schaefer 7-4, 6-4 and then defeated Angela Wang of University School 6-0, 6-0 for third place.
In doubles play, the top-seeded duo of Sarah Neubert and Isabella Heidenberger of Arrowhead won the Division 1 championship. The tandem defeated Abby Frasher and Amelia Stuckslager of Divine Savior Holy Angels 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 in the tournament final. Neubert and Isabella Heidenberger improved to 28-1 this year. Neubert improved on a sixth-place finish with a different partner last year. Frasher and Stuckslager closes their campaign with a record of 24-4.
In the match for third place, Bay Port’s Khali and Alexia Stephens won 6-3, 6-2 over Ana and Maria Cristescu of De Pere.
The Bay Port duo had lost to DSHA’s Frasher and Stuckslager 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-6 in the semifinals while the De Pere doubles team lost in the semifinals to Arrowhead doubles team 6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-5.
In Division 2, top-seeded Kylie Matz of Brookfield Academy defeated third-seeded Kate Fortney of Aquinas with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the championship match. Matz upped her record to 26-2 to capture the crown. Fortney, who enters next week’s team tournament with 32-3 record, was a four-time State Tournament qualifier.
In Division 2 doubles action, the top-seeded duo of Vivie Auth and Adel Schneider of St. Mary Catholic reigned as champions after downing sixth-seeded Natalie Cooper and Lauren Loesl of Pacelli 6-0, 6-3 in the title match. Auth and Schneider cap an undefeated season at 31-0, and Cooper and Loesl finish the season at 13-2.
