(UW-GREEN BAY COMMUNICATIONS) FORT WAYNE, Ind. –The Green Bay women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Purdue Fort Wayne Thursday afternoon.
The loss dropped Green Bay’s record to 4-7-4 overall and 2-4-2 in Horizon play. PFW improved 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-0 in HL action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
PFW took control of the game right away, getting an opening shot from Malia Velker. The Mastodons had a pair of corner kicks just a few minutes later, and kept pressuring the Phoenix defense. Purdue Fort Wayne eventually cashed in on a score from Bella Reitano, getting an assist from Morgan Gallagher to make it 1-0 PFW in the ninth minute. Green Bay nearly responded close to the halfway point of the first frame. Hanna Arvay and Senah Hanes each had a shot while Abby Lom tallied two, but all of those chances missed wide of the woodwork, and it remained 1-0 PFW. The Mastodons blitzed the Phoenix for five shots in the final 15 minutes, but GB keeper Mallorie Benhart went to work, recording three saves and it was 1-0 Mastodons going to intermission.
It was more of the same in the second half, as each squad traded a set of three shots. Ella Rogowski had GB’s first shot on goal in the 76th minute, but Jordan Imes made the save in goal for PFW. The Phoenix had a couple more opportunities in the later stages of the contest, with Hanes blasting a shot wide right before Sydney Bollis forced another save by Imes. Despite the last-minute pressure, Green Bay came up short in a 1-0 loss to Purdue Fort Wayne.
