(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – The Marquette University women’s soccer team (4-7-3, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) concluded a two-match BIG EAST road swing with a 1-1 draw at DePaul (2-5-5, 0-1-3 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago.
The match was scoreless at the intermission, despite the Golden Eagles controlling possession and scoring chances. MU had a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. Haley Christianson missed just wide from inside the box in the opening minutes and MU had a pair of headers sail wide after corner kicks.
Senior Tess O’Connell picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute, surprising the DePaul netminder with a long-distance shot just inside the right post. MU’s offense was dangerous the entire afternoon, finishing with 13 shots and 11 corner kicks.
DePaul netted the equalizer in the 74th minute, taking advantage of a MU turnover on the backline and finishing inside the far post. Marquette had the better of the chances the rest of the way, but were unable to net another late goal.
“While I recognize BIG EAST points, especially those on the road are hard to come by, we still are disappointed to be leaving Chicago with only one point,” head coach Chris Allen said. “From a positive standpoint, we are now creating attacking chances with a consistency we were not earlier in the season, but now we need greater execution of those chances. as well as set pieces.
“On the defensive side of the ball, we just concede goals way too easily,” Allen added. “Both games this weekend saw us score first and then quickly cough up the lead. So, I do believe we are getting better as a team, but we left two points on the table today and now we’re going to have to go get those points somewhere else down the road.”
NOTES
- Senior Maggie Starker, who missed the first nine matches of the year with an injury, made her first start of the season
