FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Carlos Mendez Villegas was sentenced to 321 days in jail for stabbing a man in an argument about a woman.
Mendez Villegas pleaded no contest Friday to battery and disorderly conduct for the Nov. 18 incident in Ripon, court records show.
He was originally charged with attempted homicide.
According to the criminal complaint, police were called to an apartment complex on Thorne Street at 4:42 a.m. for a fight. After it was broken up, Mendez Villegas said he was defending himself against the victim. Mendez Villegas believed the mother of his child was cheating on him with the victim. The woman told police she was now dating the victim.
“The defendant stated they were fighting and he took the knife out of VICTIM’s hand and maybe defendant stabbed VICTIM, but he did not know and he did not mean to do it. The defendant stated, ‘it was him or me.’,” the complaint states.
However, Mendez Villegas later told police he punched the victim first, starting the fight.
“VICTIM stated he tried to protect himself when they were outside wrestling, but the defendant hit him with the pipe. VICTIM stated the defendant stabbed him in the kitchen. VICTIM stated that when he was stabbed, he ran outside and the defendant got him outside. VICTIM stated he was struck with the pipe outside,” the complaint states.
The victim was also arrested for outstanding warrants, police said.
