MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ-WNFL) – The Milwaukee Brewers’ 2024 season came to an end Thursday night in stunning fashion.
The Brewers on solo home runs by Sal Frelick and Jake Bauers in the seventh inning had a 2-0 lead on the New York Mets with Devin Williams coming in to close out the game and send the Brewers to the NLDS against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Williams struggled to find the strike zone, allowing a walk to Franciso Lindor, a single to Brandon Nimmo and then a 3-run home run to Pete Alonso. Williams then hit Jesse Winker with a pitch. Winker then stole second and came home to score on Starling Marte’s single.
Williams said he needed to do better.
And then he talked about the pitch to Alonso.
The Brewers failed got a man on first in the ninth inning but a game-ending double play by Brice Turang ended the Brewers’ season and gave the Mets a 4-2 win.
Both starting pitchers did well.
Tobias Myers went 5 innings and allowed 2 hits while striking out 5 for the Brewers.
Jose Quintana went 6 innings for the Mets. He allowed 4 hits and a walk while striking out 5.
The Brewers got their 2 home runs off of Mets reliever Jose Butto.
Reliever Edwin Diaz got the win for the New York Mets.
David Peterson who started for the Mets on Sunday against the Brewers got the save.
Brewers first baseball Rhys Hoskins said that despite the loss in the National Wild Card series, it was still a successful season.
Devin Williams took the loss for the Brewers.
Brewers shortstop Willy Adames who is eligible for free agency said it was a tough way for the season to end.
As for whether or not he’ll be back next season, well …
Brewers manager Pat Murphy talked about this being 5 straight times out in the first round of the playoffs.
And now comes the long off-season of thinking about what might have been.
