NEW YORK – Marquette University senior men’s golfer Patrick Adler is the BIG EAST Conference Male Golfer of the Week for the first time in his career, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Adler won his first collegiate event by five strokes on Sunday and Monday, firing an 11-under 202 over 54 holes in the Windon Memorial Classic at Conway Farms Golf Club, a record for an MU player in the event and the third-lowest total ever for a Marquette golfer. The tournament individual runner-up, Tiger Christensen of Arizona is 18th in Monday’s PGA Tour University Ranking, while Illinois golfer Jackson Buchanan, whom Adler beat by 10 strokes, is seventh on the national list.
Adler entered the week with just two collegiate rounds in the 60s to his name and reached the mark in all three trips through the course. The native of nearby Winnetka, Illinois fired an opening round 65 and led the field from start to finish to become the third Golden Eagle to win the event, following in the footsteps of former MU All-Americans Mike Van Sickle (2007 at Lake Shore) and Hunter Eichhorn (2019 at Conway Farms).
Adler helped the Golden Eagles leapfrog Northwestern in the final round on Monday and the squad finished three stokes behind team champion Arizona in a tournament field that featured 11 teams that made NCAA Regionals each of the past two years. Fourteen of the 16 squads competed in regional play at least once in the past two years.
Adler has been on a meteoric ascent since breaking into a veteran-laden MU lineup last fall. He recorded a 1-under 71 on the final day of last year’s conference championship at Riverton Pointe and kept the momentum going this summer, winning the South of Ireland Open Championship at historic Lahinch Golf Club in County Clare as well as tying for 11th at the Wisconsin State Open.
Past individual winners and runners-up of the Windon Memorial include Tiger Woods, Casey Martin, Luke Donald, Hunter Mahan, Scott Harington and Ben Curtis.
Adler shares BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honors with Peicheng Chen of St. John’s.
