(WNFL) – The Milwaukee Brewers allowed the New York Mets to score 5 times in the fifth inning en route to an 8-4 win over the Brewers in Game 1 of their best-of-3 National Wild Card Series.
Game 2 of the series will be played Wednesday night at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
The Brewers who took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single by William Contreras and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of Rhys Hoskins fell behind the Mets 3-2 during a rocky second inning by Brewers starting pitcher Willy Peralta.
Former Brewers player Jesse Winker tripled in 2 runs and then scored on a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 Mets lead.
The Brewers got the lead back in the next inning off Mets starting pitcher Luis Severino on a run-scoring single by Jackson Chourio and an infield out by Contreras.
Things fell apart for the Brewers in the fifth inning.
Jose Iglesias drove in a run off Joel Payamps with an infield single, Mark Vientos singled in a pair of runs and J.D. Martinez did the same for an 8-4 lead. Two of the 5 runs where charged to Payamps with the other 3 charged to Aaron Ashby.
Luis Severino then pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth inning to save a tired Mets bullpen.
Jose Butto then pitched 2 hitless innings of relief for the Mets with Ryne Stanek pitching a scoreless ninth.
Frankie Montas will pitch for the Brewers on Wednesday. Montas was 7-11 with a 4,84 ERA while splitting the season with the Reds and the Brewers. Montas was 3-3 with a 4.55 ERA in 11 games with the Brewers.
Sean Manaea wll start for the Mets. Manaea was 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA this season.
