ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsin-based grocery store chains Pick ‘n Save and Metro Market announced their plans to celebrate “Hunger Action Month.”
Customers shopping at the stores will be able to round up their bills to the next dollar, with 100% of donations going to local Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin and Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.
In Northeast Wisconsin, the New Community Shelter in Green Bay and the St. Vincent de Paul Neenah/Menasha Food Pantry will receive donations.
At a news conference Thursday announcing the donations, New Community Shelter CEO Terri Refsguard said the shelter was honored to be chosen to receive donations.
“Today we’re honored to have been chosen for this incredible donation,” Refsguard said. She also stressed the importance of her program’s work.
Our program serves dinner 365 days of the year along with lunch every weekend and holiday to anyone in our community who might otherwise go hungry. And we have not missed a meal in 30 years, so for so many this program is a lifeline to a warm nutritious meal.
Additionally, Pick ‘n Save and Metro Market announced they would donate 10,000 pounds of non-perishable foods like canned vegetables and boxed pasta to communities across the state.
Joel Gregozeski, Ashwaubenon village president, thanked the company for the donations. He also highlighted how hunger is often hidden from view.
“We do have individuals that are in need and I think it’s always a surprise to many people how many of those individuals are in need because you don’t always see it face-to-face on a day-to-day basis.”
Hunger Action Month is a yearly nationwide call to action to spread awareness and work to end hunger.
