ALGOMA, WI, (WTAQ-WLUK) – 130-year-old Lake Michigan shipwreck was found four miles northeast of Algoma.
“The John Evenson” was discovered by historians Brendon Baillod and Bob Jaeck.
The pair noticed a cluster of potential shipwreck locations in the same small area and deployed their remote sensing equipment on Friday, Sept. 13. The next day Baillod and Jaeck, along with State Underwater Archeologist Tamara Thomsen and diver Zach Whitrock, surveyed and documented the wreck.
This is the third, significant shipwreck discovered by Baillod and Jaeck in the last two years.
“Elusive” was a 54-foot Evenson built in 1884 in Milwaukee as a harbor and towing tug. She was lost in June of 1895 while assisting a big steamer entering the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.
Divers began looking for the ship in the 1980’s without success. Some reports stated the ship was lost in 300 feet of water while others reported 50 feet.
