MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, attracted a crowd of more than 10,000 supporters at a rally Friday in Madison.
Harris made a campaign stop in Atlanta before departing for the Democratic stronghold and state capital of battleground Wisconsin, where she spoke at the Alliant Energy Center.
Harris arrived at the Dane County Regional Airport around 5 p.m. There, she was greeted by several of the state’s Democratic leaders, including Gov. Tony Evers. Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski and Attorney General Josh Kaul.
Harris’s speech centered around access to affordable health care and abortion rights, calling the abortion bans more than 20 states have put in place “immoral.”
She warned of the “dangers” of another Donald Trump presidency. “We are not going back,” Harris said.
She also talked about living in Wisconsin when she was growing up. Harris’s parents worked at UW-Madison.
Harris told the crowd she has Wisconsin “cred” and on a recent visit to the Badger State, she went by the house where she and her family once lived.
“Every time I land the governor says, ‘Welcome home,'” Harris said.
Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin spoke to rally-goers shortly after Harris departed the airport for the event center, WMTV-TV reports. She spoke about the economy, as well as preserving the Affordable Care Act. Baldwin said she will not stop fighting until all Americans have the affordable health care they need, WMTV says.
Ahead of Harris’s visit to Madison, members of the Republican Party weighed in. Sen. Ron Johnson joined State Treasurer John Leiber and WisGOP Chairman Brian Schimming at a press conference Friday morning.
“They are in trouble in Wisconsin and I think we have the momentum. Whatever little advantage she was supposed to have gotten out of the convention and out of the debate, it’s not there right now,” Schimming said.
“I’m calling on the mainstream media to start asking her questions,” Johnson added. “The American people deserve to know what does Kamala Harris stand for. They need to understand what a radical leftists she truly is. How she wanted an open border, how she’s for the massive deficit spending.”
Friday’s visit marked Harris’s fourth visit to Wisconsin and her first in Madison as the Democratic nominee. Former President Donald Trump has been to Wisconsin for five rallies this year and was also in Milwaukee during the Republican National Convention this spring.
