(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s soccer team (3-5-2, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) concluded a three-match homestand with a 5-0 win versus St. Thomas (4-4-2, 0-0-0 Summit League) Thursday evening at Valley Fields in the non-conference finale.
The Golden Eagles five goals were the team’s most since a 5-0 victory over Green Bay on Sept. 4, 2022.
“I was really impressed with our second half,” head coach Chris Allen said. “We have been desperate for a second-half performance like this all season. We put our foot down on the gas and to score just a minute into the half really put them (St. Thomas) away and allowed us to play a complete 90 minutes.”
Marquette led 1-0 at the intermission after Tess O’Connell’s team-leading third goal of the campaign. She headed home a perfectly-placed corner kick by Kiara Clarke into the back of the net at the 10:55 mark.
The intermission didn’t slow down MU’s offensive attack as O’Connell struck again just one minute into the second stanza. Emily Fix added her second of the season just three minutes later and was followed in the 72nd minute by senior Carina Murphy’s first-career tally in 28 all-time appearances dating back to 2021.
Forward Josie Bieda capped the scoring at the 84:47 mark, finishing a well-earned opportunity from 12 yards out. Marquette finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots and a 12-2 margin in corner kicks.
Goalkeepers Chloe Olson and Elise Krone each played a half in the combined shutout, with Krone collecting each of the team’s four saves.
