WAUPUN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A former employee at the Waupun Correctional Institution pleaded guilty Thursday for smuggling contraband into the prison in exchange for bribe payments.
Officials say William Lee Homan, 47, of Fox Lake, served as afacilities repair worker at WCI.
According to a news release, from July 2022 to Sept. 2023, Homan worked with inmates, former inmates and their associates to smuggle contraband into the maximum-security prison. In return, Homan received approximately 125 bribe payments totaling more than $53,500.
Homan is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 12 for conspiracy to commit federal program bribery. He faces up to five years in prison.
Earlier this year, federal authorities announced they had been investigating an apparent smuggling operation involving employees at WCI. 11 prison employees had been placed on administrative leave since May 2023.
In June, the former Waupun prison warden, Randall Hepp, and eight staff members were charged following several inmate deaths.
