APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The best-tasting tap water in the Badger State is right here in Northeast Wisconsin.
Appleton Water Utility was named the winner of the 2024 Wisconsin Tap Water Taste Test. It’s a recognition given each year at the Wisconsin American Water Works Association’s fall conference.
AWU will represent Wisconsin on a national stage next summer, advancing to the National Tap Water Taste Test during the American Water Works Association Annual Conference & Exposition. It will be held in Denver in June 2025.
AWU serves approximately 75,000 people, with water sourced from Lake Winnebago. Kyle Smith, a relief operator for AWU, accepted the award Wednesday on behalf of the utility.
“We are incredibly proud of this achievement and the hard work of our team. It’s an honor to be recognized for delivering water that is not only safe but also tastes great. We look forward to representing Wisconsin at the national competition in Denver,” Smith said in a news release.
The utility utilizes an advanced treatment process that includes lime softening, recarbonation, filtration, fluoridation, UV treatment, and disinfection to deliver high-quality water to its customers. The blend of surface water from Lake Winnebago and Appleton’s cutting-edge treatment process has resulted in tap water that is not only safe but also refreshingly clean and great-tasting.
The annual Tap Water Taste Test is a highlight of the WIAWWA conference. Utilities from around the state compete for the title of the best tasting water in Wisconsin.
