OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Herd have released their schedule for the 2024-25 season, confirming that they are staying at the financially troubled Oshkosh Arena.
The Oshkosh Arena has been facing serious financial troubles since it was put up for sale in March.
Bayland Buildings, who constructed the arena, filed suit against the current owner, Fox Valley Pro Basketball, alleging they owed more than $12 million. Bayland Buildings recently paid more than $644,000 in back taxes on the arena in order to receive a tax increment financing incentive and a liquor license.
In August, the courts approved VenuWorks, out of Iowa, to take over management of the arena. They said they have been busy setting up the arena for success.
“We’re really rebranding the entire arena. We’ve listened to the customers and what they have to say about Oshkosh Arena,” said HR Cook, regional vice president for VenuWorks. “Frankly, what we’re hearing is lines and quality, but it’s a fun place to go see an event.”
The Wisconsin Herd staying is just the beginning for the arena.
“Now that we have the Herd’s schedule, we can go out there, start booking the arena with these events, those artist and agents we’ve already talked to,” Cook told us. “We’re going to start locking in our dates, so you’re going to see some great entertainment.”
Oshkosh City Manager Mark Rohloff said it’s a great starting point.
“I think that the partnership with VenuWorks and the Herd will enable other events to want to come to the Oshkosh Arena, which will overall help make that facility really successful,” he said.
Ian Wenger, owner of Fifth Ward Brewing, said that the Herd is great for business. Their Brewery is located just down the block from the Oshkosh Arena. Wenger said they’re happy that the Herd came to an agreement with the new management company.
“It’s a really great venue, so hoping to see some new, not just the Herd, but other types of events and things,” he said. “Obviously, the Herd is the staple here downtown, so we really like keeping them around.”
VenuWorks says they’ve re-hired about half of the original Arena staff, and will be starting work on Monday for a planned opening in October.
