FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An Oshkosh man convicted in a drunk driving crash that killed one person and seriously injured another will spend nearly three decades behind bars.
Brian Sippel was sentenced Wednesday to 28 years in prison and 15 years of extended supervision.
In January, Sippel pleaded no contest to seven charges, including homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle, for the Jan. 14, 2023 crash in Fond du Lac County.
The victims were Mike Hoffman, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and his wife, Julie, who was hospitalized with critical injuries. The couple was from Waukesha.
The crash happened around 5:45 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 151 southbound and Interstate 41 northbound exit.
Officials say Sippel hit the victims’ car from behind in his pick up truck. His front license plate was eventually found in the front seat of the car, according to the criminal complaint. The car then hit an SUV, which sustained minor damage.
Sippel, who said he “felt like he was hit by a truck,” was also transported to the hospital.
During an interview with police, Sippel claimed he left work around 6:30 p.m., though the crash occurred before that time. He said he had one Bloody Mary in St. Cloud between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. — again, after the crash took place.
Sippel was previously convicted of drunk driving in 2004 and 2016.
