MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — A Wisconsin man is charged with fleeing the country to avoid prison for his role in the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Federal authorities allege Paul Kovacik fled to Ireland to avoid a sentence for joining a mob of supporters of former President Trump in the attack.
Kovacik is charged with defying a court order to surrender and serve three months for participating in the January 6, 2021 riot.
He was arrested last month after he voluntarily returned to the U.S. and is currently serving his sentence.
A conviction on the new charge could lead to more prison time.
Kovacik called himself a “political prisoner” when investigators questioned him after his arrest last month at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.
