MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — At a Madison middle school, President Joe Biden walked out to a gymnasium of supporters, but also a ‘Pass the Torch, Joe’ sign – a message heard inside and outside the Democratic Party in the past week.
Early on during his 17-minute speech, a fired up Biden defiantly stated the purpose of his visit.
“My friends, I’m in Wisconsin for one reason, because we’re going to win Wisconsin,” said Biden.
The first half of the speech, the 81-year-old poked fun at his age, joking he looks 40. He also talked about his debate performance.
“Can’t say it was my best performance,” said Biden. “Ever since then, there’s been a lot of speculation. What’s Joe going to do? Is he going to stay in the race? Is he going to drop out? What’s he going to do? Here is my answer. I’m running and I’m going to win again.”
The President pointed out millions of people just voted for him in primary races across the country. He said people trying to push him out of the race don’t seem to care about that.
“So, let me ask you, what do you think? Am I too old to restore Roe v Wade, the law of the land?” Biden questioned the crowd. “You think I’m too old to ban assault weapons again? To protect social security and Medicare? To get childcare, elder care for working families who need it in this nation? To make billionaires finally start to pay something beyond 8.2% of the tax rate? Let me ask you. Do you think I’m too old to beat Donald Trump? I can hardly wait.”
The back half of his speech, Biden attacked former President Donald Trump on familiar topics – January 6th, the pandemic, and Roe versus Wade.
“Folks, you can’t be pro-insurrectionist and pro-American at the same time,” Biden said. “There’s nothing beyond our capacity when we stand together, so let’s stand together, win this election, and exile Donald Trump politically.”
Dozens of demonstrators gathered outside the school where Biden gave his speech. Many were pro-Palestine, who held signs critical of the way Biden has handled the war. Other signs said Biden should bow out of the race.
