DAIRY NEWS – The United States Department of Agriculture is expected to release recommendations for reforms to the Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) in coming weeks. A special two-part series of The Dairy Signal presented by Professional Dairy Producers® (PDP) will provide dairy producers the opportunity to learn about the FMMO reform framework and proposals, and ask questions of the presenters.
Two one-hour episodes will air live 12:00-1:00 p.m. CT on separate July Wednesdays; the first will air Weds., July 10, with the second to air Weds., July 24, on The Dairy Signal at www.pdpw.org. Dairy economists Mark Stephenson, Chris Wolf and Chuck Nicholson will discuss the proposed changes to the FMMO based on testimony during a lengthy hearing last year. The two-part series will cover items the proposal changes and items remaining unchanged, as well as the next steps in moving to a producer vote on these changes later in 2024.
The Dairy Signal presenters for the July 10 and July 24 episodes include:
- Dr. Charles Nicholson, associate professor, Department of Animal & Dairy Sciences and Agricultural & Applied Economics, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Nicholson’s work focuses on the analysis of dairy markets, policy and supply chains and is supported by the Dairy Innovation Hub.
- Dr. Christopher Wolf, E.V. Baker Professor of Agricultural Economics, director of Land Grant Programs, Cornell University. He conducts research, extension and teaching focusing on dairy markets and policy, farm business management, risk management, and farm animal welfare.
- Dr. Mark Stephenson, retired from UW-Madison as Director of Dairy Policy Analysis. In this position, Dr. Stephenson conducted research and outreach activities related to the dairy industry. He also served as director of Wisconsin’s Center for Dairy Profitability.
