MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) – The most anticipated series of the season packed American Family Field Monday afternoon and the Brewers made it a memorable Memorial Day with a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Craig Counsell’s return to Milwaukee. The winningest manager in Brewer history jolted the franchise when he moved on to become the skipper of Milwaukee’s biggest rival in the off-season. Brewer fans were waiting for his return and serenaded him with resounding boos during the pre-game introductions. As the for the game, it was an outstanding pitchers duel that was scoreless until the bottom of the 8th inning. Chicago’s Justin Steele held the Brewers off the board for seven innings, giving up just three hits while striking out 8. Rookie Robert Gasser matched Steele going six plus innings allowing only three hits with 7 strikeouts. Gasser put two runners on in the 7th and gave way to Bryan Hudson who got out of the jam by striking out the side. The Milwaukee offense then came to life off Chicago’s bullpen. William Contreras hit a sharp ground ball that led to an error at third base producing the first run of the game of Mark Leiter Jr. He was replaced by Hayden Wesneski and Willy Adames greeted him with a three run homer on a 3-0 count to make it 4-0. Jackson Chourio tacked on one more with an RBI double. The Cubs avoided a shutout against Hoby Milner when Patrick Wisdom plated a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly. It was the Cubs 5th consecutive loss as they drop to 27-27 and are now four and a half games behind the NL Central leading Brewers who improved to 31-22 on the year. Freddy Peralta will face Ben Brown in game two of the series Tuesday night. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:05 PM with a 6:40 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
