GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Brown County Board of Supervisors has approved the design of a security addition on the north end of the county courthouse.
The addition will include security screening measures like metal detectors and an x-ray machine. Officials say that although the screening likely won’t be too extensive, it will ensure no one enters the building with a weapon.
Once complete, the addition will become the only entrance into the courthouse and the nearby district attorney’s office building.
The $3.8 million measure has been discussed for more than 10 years. Of Wisconsin’s 12 most populous counties, Brown County has been the only one without security screening at its courthouse.
“To think we don’t have a secure courthouse in this day and age, the county is taking steps to correct that,” said former Brown County Supervisor Keith Deneys during the county’s public safety committee meeting last week.
County officials say the project is coming in about $100,000 under budget. The goal is to have the new entry open next June.
