FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A 34-year-old Fond du Lac man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with police Tuesday.
Just before 10:15 a.m., Fond du Lac Police responded to Fleet Farm at 800 S. Military Rd. for a man wearing camouflage clothing and flashing what appeared to be a law enforcement badge.
When officers arrived the man took off and was later spotted climbing an exterior ladder to the roof of the International Paper building.
Fond du Lac Police identified the man and determined he had had prior contact with the department.
Police say the man was acting erratic, displayed severe agitation and threatened violence towards law enforcement. Police were looking to take the man into custody for felony retail theft, criminal trespass to a dwelling, criminal damage to property, and a probation/parole warrant.
During initial negotiations, Fond du Lac Police worked with staff from International Paper and requested all employees shelter in place. As more law enforcement resources arrived, officers assisted with the evacuation of employees.
Fond du Lac Police deployed the Technology Response Group, Bear Cat, a K9 unit, assembled a combined team of FDLPD and FDSO Crisis Negotiations members, and the FDLPD Co-Response Mental Health Unit consisting of a Social Worker and Mental Health & Wellness Police Specialist.
After over six hours of negotiations, the Fond du Lac Police Department SWAT team was activated. During the standoff the man armed himself several times with improvised weapons, including rocks and metal rebar stakes.
SWAT accessed the roof and deployed a less-than-lethal munition and chemical munitions before taking the man into custody.
The man was taken to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
The Fond du Lac Police Department was assisted by the City of Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue, Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol and CN Police Service – North Division Special Agent.
