OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After reports of a third home intrusion in just over a month, the city of Oshkosh is on high alert.
Oshkosh police say early Sunday morning, a woman returned home to find a male standing in her bedroom. The incident happened in the 800 block of John Street, just a block from the UW-Oshkosh campus.
The victim described the male as standing 6’2″ and wearing a ski mask, black shirt and skinny jeans.
Taylor Meyers lives nearby. She says she has been taking extra steps to ensure her safety.
“We have cameras set up outside and we use Door Buddies and lock the door every night and stuff, but it’s still scary,” said Meyers.
Two similar incidents were reported last month.
The first happened April 1 in the 800 block of Vine Avenue. A female reported around 7:30 a.m., she saw a male standing in the doorway to her bedroom. When she yelled at the male, he fled the scene.
The second happened April 14 in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Street at around 4 a.m. Another female called to report that she woke up to a male standing over her while she was sleeping in her bed. When she screamed at him, he fled the residence.
With many questions left unanswered, these incidents have people living in the community on edge.
“It’s scary. All of us have, we’re texting our group chat making sure that the doors are locked at night. Like, I couldn’t even fall asleep last night until I made sure that I checked that the doors were locked,” said Lexi Van Dyken.
It’s unclear if the three incidents are related. However, residents are urged to double check their properties.
“Locking doors if you don’t have a Blink or a Ring camera, that brings us a lot of peace,” said Meyers.
“My roommates and I are mostly making sure that everyone is there at night, everyone’s okay, making sure to lock our doors. Our cars are locked too,” said Van Dyken.
Oshkosh police are asking people in the area to check surveillance cameras for any possible sign of the suspect or suspects. Anyone with information on these incidents is urged to call Oshkosh police at 920-236-5700.
