GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The man shot by a sheriff’s deputy in Grand Chute earlier this month has died.
State investigators say when officers were called to a crash in the 2800 block of W. Prospect Avenue April 12, they saw William Jae Kil Nelson with a knife. Outagamie County Sheriff’s Deputy Noah Yeck tried to stun Nelson with a Taser, but was unsuccessful. Sgt. Ellis Brooks of the sheriff’s office then shot Nelson.
Deputies tried to save his life at the scene before Nelson, 22, was taken to the hospital, but he later died.
No one else was injured.
Brooks, a 10-year veteran of law enforcement, remains on administrative leave, as is the policy of the sheriff’s office.
Yeck has one and a half years of law enforcement experience.
The state Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation. The Wisconsin State Patrol and Grand Chute and Appleton police departments are assisting.
State law requires that an outside agency investigate whenever a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
When the investigation is finished, the results will be sent to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether Brooks was justified in shooting Nelson.
