APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff Wednesday on Appleton’s north side.
According to the Appleton Police Department, officers were first called to an apartment in the 1200 block of E. Northland Avenue late Tuesday night to check on a 41-year-old Appleton man’s well-being.
“We were called for a welfare check for this man who was intoxicated and left the home with a handgun,” said Assistant Chief Todd Freeman. “Officers worked with acquaintances and family members to determine that he was most likely headed to northern Wisconsin.”
Agencies in the northern part of the state made phone contact with the man, but because no crime had been committed at that time, officials had no reason to escalate the situation.
Shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday, the man returned to his apartment complex. Reporting parties advised the man was suicidal and armed.
Occupants of the apartment were evacuated and a perimeter was established. Officers attempted to make contact with the man, and due to statements he made, the Appleton SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were activated.
After continued dialogue with the male, he eventually exited the home and was taken into custody. The Appleton male was transported to a local hospital for further care.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
“We are grateful for the understanding and support shown by the community and our law enforcement partners as we navigated safely through this incident,” said a news release from the Appleton Police Department. “If you or someone you know is facing a crisis, please reach out for help.”
