OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Oshkosh police say they are investigating after receiving two reports of a male entering residences wearing a mask.
The two separate incidents happened within two weeks of one another and occurred just blocks away in the area of East Hall Park.
On April 1, just before 7:30 a.m. in the 800 block of Vine Avenue, a female called to report that a male had entered her residence. The female stated this male was standing in the doorway to her bedroom. When she yelled at the male, he fled the scene.
He is described as being approximately 6’2” tall with a skinny build. He was wearing a slim fitting black jacket, dark pants and a white mask.
Then, on April 14, around 4 a.m. in the 1200 block of Wisconsin Street, a female called to report that she woke up to a male standing over her while she was sleeping in her bed. When she screamed at him, he fled the residence.
He is described as a white male, approximately 5’10”- 6’ tall, a muscular build, approximately college-age with brown chin length hair. He was wearing a long sleeve dark colored t-shirt, dark pants and a black ski mask that covered half of his face.
“It’s pretty scary,” Michael Driessen of Oshkosh said. “I mean, generally it’s a pretty safe area, but what’s going on is not really a cool thing and it’s a little bit nerve-racking.”
“I’ve heard about it and I think that people should start locking their doors for sure,” Anna Allen of Oshkosh added.
It’s unclear if the victims locked their doors. It’s also unclear if the invasions are related in any way or if anyone connected to the UWO campus is involved. Regardless, it has neighbors on high alert.
“For the most part, usually there’s not a whole lot of stuff that goes down, but obviously situations like this happen, so everybody kind of just has to be aware and safe at all costs,” Driessen said.
“I always felt pretty safe on campus. Now, I’m definitely going to keep my eye open,” Allen said.
On Tuesday afternoon, campus police shared information on Facebook, including a home security survey. However, some students say they didn’t receive any alerts prior to that.
“There was the press release by the city of Oshkosh and that kind of went around, and as far as I’m aware, we haven’t received anything from the campus about it,” Driessen said.
The investigation is ongoing.
