Tobin Gilson (Brown Co. Jail)
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Greenleaf man was convicted of his seventh drunk driving offense, and is awaiting trial next month on his eighth under the influence count.
Tobin Gilson, 52, pleaded no contest Monday to operating while intoxicated-7th offense, and two counts of operating while intoxicated causing injury for an April 8 crash in Holland. Sentencing is set for May 7, court records show.
Meanwhile, in Outagamie County, Gilson faces an April 23 trial for an allegation of operating while under the influence-8th offense. That’s for an Aug. 18 arrest in Grand Chute.
In the Brown County case, deputies responded to a crash on County Z at State 57 in Holland. Tobin told police he had six cans of Budweiser in the hours before the crash. A preliminary breath test revealed a BAC of .210. Two people in the vehicle Gilson struck were injured.
“It appeared as though Tobin was driving at excessive speeds, left the roadway and was passing other cars before the crash,” the complaint states.
Prosecutors will recommend a six-year prison term at the sentencing, according to court documents. The maximum term in the prison sentence would be 12 years, six months.
In the Outagamie County case, police arrived at a grocery store parking lot, finding Gilson driving around the lot, looking for his wallet. When police encountered him, he appeared impaired, and there was evidence of drugs. Gilson admitted to smoking meth, and said he had a prescription for the OxyContin he had taken that day, according to the criminal complaint.
Gilson had prior drunk driving convictions for offenses on: May 12, 1990; June 17, 1994; Aug. 1, 1996; Feb. 22, 1998; Feb. 3, 2001; and Aug.16, 2008. His license was suspended at the time of the crash in Holland, according to the complaint.
Gilson was sentenced to 15 months in prison after the 2008 arrest, court records show.
