APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The League of Women Voters of Appleton-Fox Cities and the local Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles are collaborating on a pilot project to increase voter registration.
Based on a format used by the Dane County and Janesville Leagues, the local League has connected with the Appleton office of the DMV to set up a similar project. Volunteers from other Leagues have been very pleased with the number of citizens they were able to assist in getting registered to vote.
“They had over 1,000 people registered through this, but they did it more often,” said Jacqueline Klimaszewski, vice president of voter services for the Appleton-Fox Cities League of Women Voters. “We figured ‘Ok, for a two week span what would that be?’ so we’re looking to help 294 voters register.
Every DMV has a kiosk dedicated to MyVote.WI.gov. The plan is to have two trained League volunteers who will be there to assist voters register to vote after they have finished with their DMV business. The Appleton DMV personnel have expressed interest in the League project.
The League is providing volunteer training the week of February 19, and then will be at the Appleton DMV Monday, February 26 through Wednesday, March 13; the dates that MyVote.WI.gov is available for registration.
Volunteers will cover three 1.5 to 2.5 hours sessions each weekday and one 3-hour session on Saturdays.
So far 18 League members volunteered to get involved with the project.
