LAKE WINNEBAGO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Mother Nature has dealt another hit to the sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago.
In addition to already warm temperatures, the wind Friday has made deteriorating ice conditions even more dangerous, the Quinney Fishing Club says.
According to Bruce Eichmeier with the Quinney Fishing Club, “If we could find a way out there, we’d be out there. Our landing down here at Quinney is open water. There’s three to four different cracks. It’s pretty broke up, so I’m personally not going to go out there.”
And a sign, warning spearers about poor ice conditions off of Quinney, appears to be floating in the water too.
“Stay off the lake,” warned Calumet County Sheriff Brett Bowe. He added, “There wasn’t a lot of ice out there to begin with. Half the ice that is there, isn’t very good. And now with the wind and the crack working, I don’t know how long it’s going to last.”
They also say going out on the ice not only puts your life at risk but also those who have to come rescue you.
“I’m just hoping no one does anything stupid and puts other people in harm. But, there’s going to be that one guy, it’s not going to be me,” added John Christenson, a spearer from Pipe.
The sturgeon spearing season is scheduled to start Saturday and run for 16 days.
