MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — The state Assembly passes a bill of rights for parents of Wisconsin K-12 students.
The debate was heated prior to Thursday’s vote passing the bill along partisan lines.
Baraboo Democrat Dave Considine cited his decades of experience as teacher.
“Parents don’t always know best. Let’s be honest,” said Considine.
That comment drew a rebuke from Fall Creek Republican Karen Hurd.
“I’m the parent of five children and I know best,” said Hurd. “To say that I don’t know best is offensive and it is a lie from the pit of hell.”
Among other things the bill prohibits school staff from addressing students by their chosen pronouns or names without parental consent.
If the bill passes the state Senate it faces an almost certain veto from Governor Tony Evers, who vetoed a similar bill from the last session.
