FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Prosecutors have filed a document that allows them to keep the suspect in a fatal crash behind bars longer.
The Fond du Lac County Clerk of Courts office says a probable cause document against the suspect in a weekend crash that left a woman dead was filed Jan. 1. The document has been sealed.
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office arrested 19-year-old Jatziel Encarnacion. He has not been charged with a crime, but he is in custody on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death – duty to report accident, assistance following accident.
There were two crashes early in the morning of New Year’s Eve. The first incident happened on U.S. Highway 45 near Sandy Road in the town of Auburn, on the Fond du Lac/Washington County line. The second was about three miles into Washington County.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were called to the area of Highway 45 and Sandy Road for a rollover crash just after 1 a.m. The sheriff’s office said four of the five people in that southbound vehicle, including the driver, were ejected. Authorities added they believe alcohol was a factor in the initial crash.
Investigators determined the driver, who they identified as a 19-year-old woman from Hartford, was then hit by a second vehicle and dragged. Her body was found in Washington County, about three miles away from the initial crash scene, where she was pronounced dead.
An online fundraiser set up to help pay for the victim’s funeral expenses identifies her as Taya Grimes.
The sheriff’s office said it believes the occupants of the two vehicles involved in these crashes knew each other and were traveling together.
