HOWARD, WI (WTAQ) — The number of dead geese found at Duck Creek Quarry in Howard is continuing to rise.
“As of this morning [Monday] we’re at 34 dead with one still sick,” said animal control/humane officer Matt Atkinson.
Atkinson believes the bird flu to be the problem, but official test results on some of the dead birds from the DNR in Madison are expected to be released on Wednesday.
The deceased birds are being found in all areas of the quarry.
“A lot of them are being found in the water,” said Atkinson. “But essentially it’s wherever they pass and whatever way the wind blows is what shore they’ll end up on.”
Officials are taking precautions. Patrols are going out to the quarry at least twice per day to remove the dead and sick birds, the quarry and nearby trails are closed to the public, and coyote decoys are set up to stop birds from congregating at the quarry and further spreading the disease.
Anyone who sees five or more dead waterfowl or any number of dead birds of prey is asked to call animal control at (920) 530-1044. Howard also provides animal control service to Suamico, Allouez, Bellevue and the town of Pittsfield.
