HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — December is National Learn a Foreign Language Month. Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to brush up on your high school French, the Brown County Library has the resources to help you learn a new language.
From books to online practice, Spanish to Swahili, you’ll find what you’re looking for.
Amy Greatens with the Weyers-Hilliard branch of the Brown County Library in Howard made these recommendations:
1. The Book of Languages by Mick Webb (Children’s Non-Fiction)
- Covers 21 spoken languages around the world with a short history of the language, the alphabet, and how to have a short conversation in each.
2. Fluent in 3 Months by Benny Lewis (Adult Non-Fiction)
- Tips on how anyone at any age can learn any foreign language quickly. Some general tips, some hints for specific languages.
3. English For Everyone (Adult Non-Fiction)
- A complete 4-level series for adults learning English, no matter what their native language.
4. In Other Words by Jhumpa Lahiri (Adult Non-Fiction)
- A first-hand account of the author’s journey to learning Italian. Inspiration to other language learners reading about her struggles and successes.
5. Rosetta Stone and Transparent Language (Online Resources)
- Both resources are available free with a Brown County Library card. Rosetta Stone offers foundational lessons in 29 languages, while Transparent Language has over 100. Practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
