Pending final contract details, language and a signature, 64 year Pat Murphy will become the next manager of the Milwaukee Brewers. The long-time bench coach for Craig Counsell was reportedly the only serious candidate considered to take over for Counsell who spent nine seasons managing the Brewers before stunning state baseball fans by taking the managerial job with the Chicago Cubs last week thanks to the 5 year, 40 million dollar contract that will make him the highest paid skipper in baseball history. Murphy has been associated with Counsell since he was his head coach when Craig played at the University of Notre Dame. Murphy also coached at Arizona State before joining the San Diego Padres as an instructor, rising to interim manager after Bud Black’s firing in the 2016 season. He joined the Brewers the following year and provided the steady, experienced presence in the dugout and the clubhouse throughout. Murphy was the only candidate mentioned by name when Brewers General Manager Matt Arnold discussed potential successors to Counsell.
