OUTAGAMIE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) — As winter approaches, snowmobilers are getting ready for the season.
The Outagamie County Sheriff’s Department is hosting a Snowmobile Safety Class at the Shadows on the Wolf Educational Center located at N5575 Old Highway 54 in Shiocton.
The classes will be held on December 4, 11 and 18 from 6 – 9 p.m. and will go over topics including snowmobile safety, snowmobile operation, land owner relationships, first aid, and more. Students must attend all three classes.
People 12 years or older and born after January 1, 1985 must have a snowmobile safety certification to operate a snowmobile on public trails or waterways.
Last winter season (December 2022-March 2023), Wisconsin saw 18 fatal snowmobile accidents. Accidents are mostly due to lack of rider experience, speeding, not obeying posted signage, and alcohol consumption.
A $10 fee will be paid the first class period, and a parent or guardian must attend the first class.
Adults are encouraged to attend all the classes with their students.
Students should bring something to write with and booklets will be provided.
