FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Investigators have released the name of the deputy who was involved in a fatal exchange of gunfire over the weekend in Fond du Lac.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation says Deputy Blaine Evans and 33-year-old Kyle Massie were involved in the shooting which killed Massie Saturday morning. Evans’ canine partner, Iro, was shot and seriously wounded. The dog continues to recover at a veterinary hospital.
DCI says police and sheriff’s officials were called to a disturbance involving weapons in the 500 block of Drury Place just before 6 a.m. Saturday. Investigators say Evans encountered Massie inside a vehicle. Shortly after, DCI says the two fired shots at each other. Massie was injured, and lifesaving efforts failed.
It remains unclear who fired the shot that killed Massie, DCI says.
Evans, who has five years of law enforcement experience, was placed on administrative leave, per sheriff’s department policy.
DCI is leading the investigation. State law requires that an outside agency investigate whenever a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
The results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether Evans will face any criminal charges related to the shooting.
