The hits kept coming two bags at a time in a four run fourth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers evened their series with the St. Louis Cardinals in a 7-3 victory Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The Crew spotted the Cards two in the first with Trevor Megill making another one inning start. He gave up two runs on three hits but Colin Rea took over from there and settled things down over the next four and two third innings to pick up the win in relief. Rea, who is third on the team in innings pitched was called “a rock” by Manager Craig Counsell after giving up only a solo home run to Richie Palacios in the 5th. By then, the Brewers had moved in front. William Contreras got them on the board with his 17th home run of the year, a solo shot in the third. It was the big fourth inning that produced the lead as Willy Adames, Josh Donaldson, Tyrone Taylor and Sal Frelick all delivered RBI doubles in succession. Milwaukee tacked on single runs in the 8th and 9th to finish it off, earning Counsell the 700th win of his managerial career in Milwaukee. The Brewers now stand 85-66 on the year and maintained a six game lead in the NL Central Division race with 11 games to play. The Chicago Cubs rebounded from a sweep by the Diamondbacks in Arizona by returning to Wrigley Field to rout the Pittsburgh Pirates 14-1.
