Purchasing a hunting license remains one of the best ways to directly support the conservation of game and non-game wildlife species in Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is responsible for maintaining healthy wildlife populations for generations to come. That includes managing wildlife habitat, creating and maintaining infrastructure within public wildlife areas, conducting research and providing educational programming to the public.
When hunters buy their license through Go Wild, they’re supporting critical DNR programming, as license sales directly generate funding for state wildlife-management efforts. Additionally, license sales help secure federal funding for Wisconsin’s wildlife management efforts, as each state’s Pittman-Robertson funding allocation, federal money earmarked exclusively for wildlife management, is tied directly to the number of licensed hunters recorded by each state. That means every time someone purchases their Wisconsin hunting license, they aren’t just supporting the DNR’s work; they are also helping bring more federal dollars back to the state for wildlife management.
Hunting isn’t for everybody, and that’s okay. Whether it be joining a conservation organization, volunteering or even buying a hunting license or stamp without using it to harvest an animal, there are many ways to help support state-level wildlife conservation efforts. If you’re interested in learning more about hunting, the DNR offers a variety of programs with safe and welcoming instructors.
