Milwaukee Brewers
MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) – Big innings, big wins and big brooms.
The Milwaukee Brewers are on their biggest roll of the season, as they beat the San Diego Padres 10-6 Sunday afternoon at American Family Field for their 8th straight victory and third straight series sweep. The roll began with a three game sweep of the American League western division leading Texas Rangers in Arlington last weekend. The Crew returned home and took both games against the AL Central leading Minnesota Twins. The Padres arrived, still in the hunt in the National League Wild Card race but Milwaukee swept them out of town.
Friday night, it was a 7-3 win, thanks to a five run third inning. On Saturday, the Brewers scored all five runs in the 5th inning and held on for a 5-4 victory.
Sunday’s sweeper took some work. Adrian Houser gave up a two run homer to Gary Sanchez and a solo shot off the bat of Matthew Batten in the second inning as San Diego jumped out front 4-1. Houser had to leave after just two innings of work what the Brewers called “right forearm stiffness”. William Contreras launched a long homer in the first for Milwaukee and it was a 4-2 game until another big inning arrived. The Brewers piled up 7 runs in the 6th with Rowdy Tellez and Sal Frelick swatting two run doubles and Mark Canha added a two run single giving Milwaukee a 9-4 lead.
The Padres got back in the game thanks an incredibly wild Abner Uribe. He came out of the pen for the 7th inning and couldn’t record an out. Uribe walked three batters, hit another and uncorked three wild pitches as San Diego scored twice.
Hoby Millner was brought on and he recorded three straight outs to put out the fire. Milwaukee tacked on one more run for good measure and kept the train rolling at full speed.
The win has the surging Brewers at 75-57, good for a four game lead over the equally warm Chicago Cubs who rolled Pittsburgh Sunday 10-1.
Milwaukee heads to Wrigley Field for an important three game series against their rivals beginning tonight. Pregame on WTAQ at 6:35, first pitch at 7:10.
