GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Heritage Hill State Historical Park is giving its visitors the chance to experience what life was like in Wisconsin during the Civil War.
On August 12 and 13, they’re hosting a Civil War Encampment. There will be no battle reenactments, as Wisconsin geographically did not see any combat.
Visitors can learn about the 12th infantry, which saw action at Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, and also participated in Sherman’s March to the Sea; and Co. G – 2nd Wisconsin Infantry.
Participants will also experience the daily life as a soldier.
“Cooking breakfast, where they slept, they would do a lot of drilling during the day on marching,” said Elizabeth Jolly with Heritage Hill. “There wasn’t a ton of fun in the Civil War, but also anything they would have done to pass the time.”
On Saturday, visitors will even have the opportunity to get an authentic Tin Type Photo.
From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 – 2 p.m. on Sunday, there will be select musical performances and an opportunity to chat with the authors of Lincoln & Liberty Too!, an original musical which made its debut in May as part of World Premier Wisconsin.
The musical was written by siblings Ralph (book and lyrics) and Mary (music) Ehlinger about their great-great grandparents and their experience during the Civil War.
