NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The officers who fatally shot a man in Neenah Wednesday work for the Appleton Police Department and Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the shooting, says both officers work undercover for the Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group drug unit. Because they work undercover, their names will not be released.
The Appleton officer is 42 years old and has been on the force for five years, with 10 years of other law enforcement experience.
The Outagamie County sheriff’s deputy is 31 years old and has been with the department for six years.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as policy of their respective departments.
The shooting took place while officers were trying to arrest a man on multiple warrants at the Mobil gas station, 521 S. Commercial St. Just before 5 p.m., investigators say when officers confronted the man, he pulled out a weapon and the officers shot him. Medical aid was given at the scene and the man was taken to the hospital, where he died.
No officers or civilians were injured.
The 37-year-old man’s name has not been released. His last known address was in the Oshkosh area.
State law requires an outside agency to investigate cases where police use deadly force.
When the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office finishes its investigation, the results will be forwarded to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the officers were justified in shooting the man.
