Manitowoc Fire and Rescue Department responds to garage fire July 2, 2023.
MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) — The Manitowoc Fire and Rescue Department responded to an active garage fire at a residence with heavy smoke and flames impinging on the residence. The incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. on Sunday in the 700 block of South 26th Street.
A still alarm response was initiated by the MFRD. Prior to arrival of MFRD, Manitowoc Police arrived on scene.
While en route and seeing the large plume of thick black smoke, a MABAS Box Card was requested to the working still alarm.
Upon MFRD arrival of the first fire apparatus within four minutes, a hose line was deployed to protect the residence that was beginning to ignite.
Upon arrival of additional crews, efforts were focused on several other exposures to minimize the damage from the garage fire.
Once the exposures were addressed and cooled down, efforts were placed on extinguishment of the garage fire. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes.
Chief Blaser stated; “Initial arriving crews did an awesome job in protecting additional property and content loss, by recognizing the conditions and the proximity of the adjacent properties. In total, nine structures suffered heat damage and one vehicle located outside the garage. Although we do not have a dollar loss at this time, it could have been much higher if not for the actions taken.”
Additional overhaul and salvage were performed to extinguish hot spots found inside the garage.
However due to the damage sustained to the garage, it was razed with use of a mini excavator.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and no dollar amount of loss is available.
The MFRD was assist by Manitowoc Police Department, Manitowoc Public Utilities, Manitowoc Public Works, and Wisconsin Public Service. Two Rivers provided EMS coverage for the community during the incident along with assistance from Rockwood, Silver Creek and Branch Fire.
