The Milwaukee Brewers combined outstanding pitching with one big swing of the bat to beat the New York Mets 2-1 in the opener of a four game series at Citi Field Monday night. Colin Rea and three relivers combined on a three hitter. Rea got the better of a Cy Young winner in Justin Verlander by lasting six and third innings, giving up all three of the hits and only one run. That came in the third when Starling Marte singled, stole second and advanced to third when the ball rolled to centerfield. He came home on a Francisco Lindor sacrifice fly to give the Mets the lead. Verlander got through five scoreless innings but Milwaukee touched him for five hits and with a couple of walks, ran his pitch count up to 100 and he gave way to the bullpen. Drew Smith entered in the sixth and that’s when rookie Joey Wiemer connected on his 11th home run of the year, a two run shot to put the Brewers on top. Hoby Millner, Elvis Peguero and Devin Williams finished it off with two and two thirds innings of hitless relief, Willliams earning his 14th save of the year. With Baltimore knocking off Cincinnati 10-3, the Brewers moved back into first place in the NL Central by a half game with a 41-37 record. Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.53 ERA) will face David Peterson (1-6. 8.08) in game two Tuesday night. Pre-game coverage begins at 5:35 PM with a 6:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
