GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) is in the midst of a multi-phase improvement project; which means there’s a lot of construction going on at, and around, the airport.
“Last year, the exterior of the terminal was painted and improvements were made to the entrance/exit plazas and walkways,” stated Airport Director, Marty Piette. “This year, work began in mid-April with the repaving of the short-term parking lot and replacing old fencing in the parking lots with new security fencing that looks much better.”
Repaving of the long-term parking area will soon take place and be done in phases to maximize available parking during construction.
Underway right now is the reconstruction of the North/South Runway (RY 18/36) and relining of the Dutchman Creek culvert under Runway 18/36.
While significant safety improvements are made, the North/South Runway is closed until approximately August 15. That means all planes are using the East/West Runway (RY6/24), resulting in an increase in air traffic for those living adjacent to or near the single open runway.
Additionally, concrete is being removed from the closed runway in order for the new runway, taxiway and aprons to be installed, resulting in some noise during daytime hours.
“We greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our neighbors as these improvements are being completed,” added Piette. “I can assure everyone that the workers are focused on getting the job done as safely and quickly as possible.”
In addition to the airport improvement work, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) construction is taking place on WIS 172 starting at the entrance of GRB to I-43. This project includes roadway and ramp resurfacing with lane and ramp closures to take place primarily at night.
“Travelers should know that this construction work won’t impact any flights but, because of the road and parking lot construction, you may want to allow a little more time to get to and from the airport,” added Piette.
“It’s important to understand that these improvement projects will ultimately allow the airport to continue to safely serve the aviation industry and traveling public, while contributing to the economic prosperity of Brown County,” stated Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “We thank travelers as well as airport neighbors for their patience as we work toward completing the improvements.”
It is anticipated most of the GRB work will be completed by fall of this year. The $8.2 million project costs are funded through a combination of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airport Improvement (AIP) grant funds and Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics (WiBOA) state-aid grants.
