So much for handling prosperity. The Milwaukee Brewers swept the Pittsburgh Pirates to move back into first place in the National League Central Division over the weekend but on Monday night, they were knocked back into second by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the opener of a three game series at American Family Field, the NL West leaders rolled over the Crew 9-1. The Diamondbacks jumped all over starter Corbin Burnes to the tune of six runs on five hits in the very first inning. Burnes found trouble right away by loading the bases with nobody out. Christian Walker then dropped a bloop single in front of centerfielder Joey Wiemer to bring home the first run. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. delivered a two run single. A 4th run came on a replay reviewed fielder’s choice and then Alek Thomas took Burnes over the right field wall for a two run blast. Burnes would give up an unearned run in the 5th bringing his unsightly line to 5 innings pitched, 8 runs, 7 earned on 8 hits with two walks and but three strikeouts. Adrian Houser worked the final four innings, giving up a run on three hits. Milwaukee’s offense disappeared once more, producing only three hits on the night, all against starter Merrill Kelly who worked seven innings for his 9th win of the year. Christian Yelich ripped an RBI triple into the right field corner to bring home the only Brewer tally. Willy Adames and Brian Anderson had the only other two hits. The loss drops the Crew to 37-35, now a half game behind the sizzling Cincinnati Reds who reached first place for the first time this year thanks to a 9th straight victory, 5-4 over the Colorado Rockies. Colin Rea will take the mound in game two of the series against Arizona who will counter with Ryne Nelson. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
