FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man who tossed a bag of drugs out of a vehicle while being chased by police on Interstate-41 was sentenced Monday to four years in prison.
Jarvis Starks, 29, pleaded no contest Monday to three counts, including possession with intent to deliver cocaine, recklessly endangering safety and fleeing an officer. Four other counts were also dismissed.
Starks was also placed on extended supervision for five years and probation for four years after that by Judge Tricia Walker, according to a court official.
The chase happened in July.
Winnebago County deputies notified Fond du Lac County authorities that a vehicle had sped off after they tried to pull it over for an unsafe lane deviation on Interstate 41.
Fond du Lac County sheriff’s officials say one of their deputies then saw the car near Townline Road, north of Fond du Lac. The car again made an unsafe lane change. The deputy also discovered that the license plate was registered to a different vehicle. When the deputy turned on his lights and siren, the car sped off.
During the chase, a white bag was thrown from the vehicle and landed in the middle of the interstate. The deputy stopped and picked up the bag, which was determined to contain illegal drugs.
The car continued on into Dodge County. When it reached the area of Quad Graphics near Lomira, the driver lost control and the vehicle went into the ditch. It became disabled and stopped on some railroad tracks west of I-41. The driver got out and ran off.
Deputies called in a police dog and eventually found the man hiding in some tall grass. He was arrested.
The chase covered 13.8 miles.
During a search of the vehicle, deputies found a handgun and a digital scale. The bag turned out to have five Ziploc bags of counterfeit oxycodone pills laced with fentanyl, as well as three bags of cocaine.
