MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Many might not know one of the most legendary animators in history is a Marinette native, but they will now, after a state historical marker was dedicated to him today.
John Hubley was born in 1914.
He is the co-creator of Mr. Magoo and was nominated for seven Academy awards over his career, with three wins.
The plaque for the state historical marker will forever sit outside the Stephenson Public Library.
Griffin Hansen, a 22-year-old animator student from New Hampshire, started this effort to honor Hubley three years ago.
“I think everyone in animation now owes something to the Hubleys and I’d like to memorialize that in any way that I can so the general public knows the influence that he’s had on people such as myself,” said Hansen.
Hubley’s wife, Faith, was also an animator.
Marinette’s mayor proclaimed May 20th as John and Faith Hubley Day in the city.
