Karen Schwind
MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A woman who stole more than $60,000 from her employer was sentenced to three years in prison.
Karen Schwind, 54, pleaded no contest Tuesday to 17 counts, including theft in a business setting and fraudulent writings by a corporate officer. She also placed on extended supervision for three years, probation after that for eight years, according to a court official.
Schwind was ordered to pay a total of $63,193.41, of which she has already paid more than $18,000. She also was ordered to stay away from gambling venues, as her addiction was cited as a reason behind the thefts.
According to the criminal complaint, Schwind altered QuickBooks records for a Kiel company to make it appear as though a legitimate vendor had been paid when, in fact, the check was made payable to Schwind.
She also was convicted on November on a related filing fraudulent income tax charge in Kewaunee County, and sentenced to three months in jail
Schwind has a previous conviction for a similar incident in Fond du Lac County, but Steller said he had not done a criminal background check because she was referred by a trusted resource. Court records show Schwind was convicted of three theft counts in 2017, with a loss of $24,000 to an asphalt company.
